Series background & context

The Riverview Inn books take one of Molly O'Keefe's warmest recurring settings and let it grow into a fuller ensemble series. The inn, set in the Catskills, feels almost like a character in its own right. It is beautiful, a little magical, full of history, and always ready to throw people back together before they have decided they are ready.

The series opens with Wedding at the Riverview Inn, where exes Alice and Gabe have to work side by side to pull off a huge event even though their marriage never really stopped hurting. That combination, family business, emotional history, and a deadline nobody can escape, sets the tone nicely. Later books like Secrets of the Riverview Inn and Home to the Riverview Inn keep expanding the world, bringing in more family, more guests, and more reasons the inn becomes a crossroads for people who badly need a second chance.

The holiday installment fits naturally too. Once a series has an inn this atmospheric, of course Christmas is going to matter. Snow, celebrations, old traditions, and the ache of wanting home all become part of the emotional weather.

This is O'Keefe in a slightly softer register.

That does not mean the books are light on pain. There is still divorce, addiction, secrets, money trouble, and the fallout from years of bad choices. But the series has a broader, more communal feel than some of her darker work. People do not just find romance here. They often find steadier ground.

If you like family sagas with a strong sense of place, this series delivers. Read it in order if you want to watch the inn fill up with history and connection. The pleasure is not only in each couple, but in seeing how one place keeps offering damaged people a way back into life.
