Series background & context

Set around the fictional Riverhill estate in Manchester, this trilogy follows ordinary families whose lives are ripped open by crime, gossip and gang violence. The books are tightly linked, so you watch the same community over years as trouble escalates.

In Slur, young office worker Julie Quinley wakes after a night out to find herself accused of murder. The police have no proof, but her name is tainted. Colleagues whisper, neighbours turn away and even members of her own family doubt her. Julie leans on a small circle of loyal friends, including Vinny, and together they start digging into what really happened.

The estate itself is almost a character here. Riverhill is a place of cramped flats, back alleys and long memories, where one rumour can ruin a life. As Julie and her friends chase leads the police ignore, they discover how easily an innocent person can be crushed between fear and convenience.

A Gangster's Grip shifts the focus to Rita, who returns from Greece with her husband Yansis expecting a warm welcome. Instead she finds a stranger, Leroy, lounging in her parents' living room, smoking dope and calling himself a businessman. He is also her sister Jenny's boyfriend and the father of her unborn child. Rita cannot accept the hold he seems to have on the family and starts asking questions that drag her toward Manchester's inter gang rivalries.

The second book broadens the canvas, moving between Riverhill and districts like Moss Side and Longsight at a time when gun crime is on the rise. Rita's determination to protect Jenny pulls her into dangerous bars, back rooms and deals, and she realises that her family are playing a game whose rules they barely understand.

Five years later in Danger by Association, Rita and Yansis return once more for her brother John's wedding, this time with their young son Daniel in tow. Old grudges on the estate have not been forgotten. When Daniel disappears, Rita is forced to reckon with every enemy she has made. John, now a hardened police officer with his own wartime scars, will stop at nothing to help her find the boy.

Time is short, and everyone on Riverhill knows more than they are willing to say.

Across the trilogy Heather Burnside blends fast moving plots with a close look at working class Manchester life. The Riverhill books are less about clever puzzles and more about loyalty, fear and the small decisions that can tip a family into disaster. If you read them in order you will see characters grow up, move away and be pulled back again, while the estate itself changes from a backdrop into a place you can almost walk through.
