Series background & context
The Manchester Trilogy is a gangland family saga that follows Adele and Peter Robinson from a brutal childhood on a run down estate to the upper reaches of the city's criminal underworld. Each novel stands as its own story, but together they chart one long arc.
Born Bad opens with the Robinson siblings growing up under an alcoholic, violent father and a beaten down mother. The house is full of fear, yet Adele is determined to carve out a different future. She studies hard, takes inspiration from her grandmother and builds a career far from the estate. Peter takes the opposite route, drawn to the easy money, status and danger of local gangs.
Old habits do not let go easily.
A single night of violence drags Adele back into the world she thought she had escaped, forcing her to rely on the very brother whose choices she has always feared. The tension between the life she wants and the one she owes her family runs through all three books.
In Blood Ties, Adele is in prison for the murder of her abusive father. Behind bars she has to earn respect quickly if she wants to stay safe, which means learning when to stand up and when to step back. Outside, Peter is running an expanding criminal empire built on protection rackets, nightclubs and get rich schemes. His success brings attention from rival gangs and from the police, and a turf war looms over the city.
Vendetta sees Adele released and stepping into Peter's shoes when he is jailed for a serious assault. She agrees to manage his nightclub, The Golden Bell, in a Manchester club scene dominated by illegal security and protection money. Peter's second in command, Glynn, resents answering to her, and his quiet scheming makes the already volatile world of late night bars even more dangerous.
Across the trilogy Burnside keeps the focus tightly on the Robinsons and those closest to them. Violence, family loyalty and the hope of a clean start pull the characters in different directions, and the books rarely offer easy answers. Read in sequence, Born Bad, Blood Ties and Vendetta take you from cramped childhood bedrooms to prison wings and backroom deals, always returning to the question of how far you would go for your own.
