Series background & context

Rites of Possession opens with guilt, grief, and a very bad magical accident. The heroine is already living in the shadows because her rogue sorcery is punishable by death. She steals from the corrupt and tries, in her own rough way, to balance the harm in the world. Then she tries to help a dying noblewoman and ends up stealing her soul instead.

That is how the real trouble starts.

The dead woman leaves behind a mission: infiltrate the royal college, expose a conspiracy, and stop a terrifying power from being unleashed across the kingdom. To do that, the heroine has to leave the streets and pose as someone she is not, moving through a world of noble manners, lessons, balls, and watchful enemies. The class tension in the series is strong, because she never forgets where she came from and the people around her never stop underestimating her.

The four noblemen at the center of the romance complicate everything. They are allies, possible threats, and pieces of a world she has every reason not to trust. That makes the emotional arc especially fun. The heroine is not only hiding dangerous magic. She is also trying not to care too much about people who could still turn away from her if they knew the full truth.

The fantasy plot has a darker, more epic feel than the school setting first suggests. Gods, illicit sorcery, political unrest, and inherited damage all play a part. By the later books, the story widens into a much bigger battle over what kind of realm can survive and who gets to shape it.

It is a romantasy with real teeth.

If you like secret identities, magical colleges, forbidden power, and heroines who have to walk into elite spaces armed mainly with nerve and stubbornness, Rites of Possession is a strong pick. It mixes court intrigue, mystery, and emotional risk in a way that keeps the pages turning.
