Author bio
Claire C Riley is a British author who has built a career out of mixing romance with danger. Sometimes that danger comes from zombies. Sometimes it comes from bikers, vampires, witches, or criminal families. Whatever the setup, her books usually carry the same pull, high stakes, bruised characters, and a darker emotional edge than the average love story.
She published Limerence in 2013, and that debut already showed a lot of what would become her trademark. It is a vampire novel, but not a soft one. In an early interview, Riley talked about wanting vampires to feel dangerous again, and about making sure her characters reacted in ways that felt human, even when the story turned wild. That mix of horror, attraction, and obsession still feels central to her work.
Then came Odium.
For many readers, that is the series most closely tied to her name. With Nina at the center, Odium gave Riley room to write the end of the world on a big emotional scale, survival, grief, violence, found family, and love that has to fight for space in a ruined landscape. She kept expanding that world through multiple novels and companion stories, and later returned to the apocalypse in Red Eye, co-written with Eli Constant, and Thicker Than Blood, co-written with Madeline Sheehan.
She does not stay in one lane for long.
Alongside the post-apocalyptic books, Riley has written gritty motorcycle club romance, dark paranormal romance, romantic suspense, mafia romance, and shared-world projects. Books like Twisted Magic, Beautiful Victim, Fragments of Delores, Deviant Prince, and Twisted Princess show how comfortable she is jumping between subgenres while keeping the mood intense. If you like stories with heat, menace, and damaged people trying to hold themselves together, that range is a big part of the appeal.
Her characters tend to be strong, but rarely untouched. They are survivors, obsessives, protectors, outsiders, and people carrying old wounds into already dangerous situations. Riley likes pressure-cooker settings, outlaw clubs, isolated towns, post-apocalyptic roads, hidden supernatural worlds, and families built on power instead of tenderness. Even when a book moves fast, there is usually an emotional bruise underneath it.
By the mid-2010s she had built a loyal audience, especially in horror and post-apocalyptic fiction. She has been listed as a USA Today and international bestselling author, and she was also named a top ten bestselling British horror writer in 2015 and 2016. More recently, she has said that she writes thrillers and suspense under the name C. Riley.
She lives in Manchester, England, with her husband, three daughters, and a rescue beagle.
That ordinary family detail sits nicely beside the fiction. Riley's books can be full of blood, monsters, chaos, and brutal choices, but the thing that keeps them from feeling cold is the emotional core. Again and again, she writes about people trying to protect someone, keep hold of love, or find a reason to keep going after the world has done its worst. That is true in Limerence, true in Out of the Dark, and very true in Odium. If you are new to her work, expect darkness, momentum, and characters who rarely get the easy way out.
