Series background & context
The Riftwar Legacy bridges the gap between the end of the original Riftwar Saga and the later Krondor’s Sons and Serpentwar books. It brings the action back to the city of Krondor and hands center stage to characters who once played supporting roles, most notably Squire James—better known in the gutters as Jimmy the Hand.
Set roughly a decade after A Darkness at Sethanon, the opening novel Krondor: The Betrayal begins with a defector: Gorath, a moredhel warrior who comes to the Kingdom with news of assassins, dark magic and rebellious clans on the move. James, his fellow squire Locklear, and young magician Owyn find themselves racing to uncover how the Nighthawks, a cabal of killers, and a mysterious group of sorcerers known as the Six fit into a wider plot against the realm.
Krondor: The Assassins continues that thread but leans hard into urban tension. A wave of seemingly directionless murders rocks Krondor just as visiting nobles arrive, and the balance of power in the city’s underworld shatters. James is caught between his duties to Prince Arutha and his ties to the Mockers, while William conDoin, son of Pug, faces his own trial by fire leading men in the field.
In Krondor: Tear of the Gods, a raid at sea puts the holiest artifact of the Kingdom’s temples, the Tear of the Gods, at the bottom of the ocean. James, William and the new court magician Jazhara must retrieve it before pirates, cultists and the sorcerer Sidi can twist it to their own ends. The adventure mixes harbor dives, dungeon crawls and divine stakes, tying street‑level skullduggery back into the cosmic forces that have always haunted Midkemia.
The novella Jimmy and the Crawler serves as a coda, wrapping up the long‑running mystery of the Crawler, a crime lord whose influence has been felt in the shadows throughout the series. James once again navigates between crowns and criminals as he and his allies chase leads into neighboring Kesh.
Unlike the broad war sagas, the Riftwar Legacy has the feel of a linked set of adventures. Battles still matter, but so do alleyway ambushes, closed‑door council meetings and the politics of thieves’ guilds. It’s also an accessible on‑ramp for readers who enjoy action‑heavy fantasy with a strong dash of mystery.
For anyone who liked Jimmy in the earlier books and wanted more time with him, this is the place to find it, along with a clearer picture of how Krondor survives in the uneasy peace between great wars.
