1179: Irish nobleman Ferdia is captured during Henry II’s wars and saves the life of the king’s son Richard, becoming his squire. Thrown into sieges and rebellions in Aquitaine, he witnesses the making of the warrior who will earn the name Lionheart and attract deadly jealousy at home.

Series background & context

The Richard the Lionheart series shifts Ben Kane’s focus from the ancient world to the stormy politics and battlefields of the late twelfth century. It follows Richard from headstrong prince to battle-hardened king, seen largely through the eyes of an outsider who becomes his most trusted companion.

In Lionheart, that outsider is Ferdia, an Irish nobleman taken prisoner during Henry II’s campaigns in Ireland. When Ferdia saves the life of the king’s son Richard, he is rewarded — or punished, depending on your view — by being made the prince’s squire. Through Ferdia’s eyes you see the tensions within the Plantagenet family: Henry II, ageing but still formidable; scheming brothers; and a court where loyalty is always being tested. The early campaign in Aquitaine, with its sieges and small-scale raids, forges Richard’s reputation as a fearless commander and shows Ferdia what following him will cost.

Crusader carries the story east. Now king, Richard leads a vast coalition on the Third Crusade, heading for the Holy Land and a confrontation with Saladin. The books don’t just follow the big set-pieces like the battle of Arsuf; they spend time on the slog of moving an army across hostile territory, the politics between rival Christian leaders and the grim reality of siege warfare. Ferdia, now more than just a squire, has to balance his duty to his king with his own sense of right and wrong, especially when victory demands hard choices.

In King, the focus turns back toward Europe. With Jerusalem still out of reach and a fragile peace agreed, Richard has to fight his way home through a continent full of enemies and so‑called allies. Captivity, ransoms and plots back in England — where his brother John and the French king see opportunity in his absence — all play their part. Ferdia finds that palace intrigue can be just as dangerous as the front line, and that keeping Richard on the throne may be the hardest assignment yet.

Across the trilogy, you get plenty of arrows-in-the-air moments: charges in full mail, close-quarters fighting on walls and in breach lines, and the chaos of naval action in crowded Mediterranean harbours. But the series also makes room for quieter beats: tense negotiations in lamplit tents, fallible kings losing their tempers, and a squire-turned-knight trying to decide how far loyalty can stretch.

If you’re interested in the clash between chivalric ideals and political reality, or you just want to follow Richard from his first battles to his troubled reign, these books give you a clear, accessible route through one of medieval Europe’s most colourful lives.
