Clash of Empires

by Ben Kane

2018

As Hannibal’s defeat crowns Rome the western superpower, ambitious senator Flamininus turns his gaze to Greece. While Roman brothers Felix and Antonius march in the legions, poor oarsman Demetrios dreams of joining Macedon’s phalanx, and both sides edge toward a brutal collision of empires.

Series background & context

Clash of Empires is about what happens when two very different military systems run headlong into each other. Set in the early second century BC, it covers Rome’s first major war in Greece and the showdown between the legions and the Macedonian phalanx.

The opening novel, Clash of Empires, begins on the plains of Zama, where Rome finally breaks Hannibal and emerges as the dominant western power. From there the story moves into the next phase of expansion. On the Roman side you meet Felix and his brother Antonius, ordinary soldiers whose lives are shaped by the ambitions of men like the young senator Flamininus. He is hungry for glory and sees conquering Macedon as his route to the top.

Across the water, King Philip V of Macedon is just as determined not to be pushed aside. His kingdom remembers Alexander the Great; his infantry still fight in the close-packed phalanx with their long pikes, and he believes that wall of spear points can still terrify any foe. Demetrios, a poor oarsman who dreams of a place in the phalanx, gives you a ground-level view of Macedonian hopes and fears.

The series moves between these viewpoints as Rome and Macedon circle each other, each trying to pull Greek cities and smaller powers into their camp. You get councils as well as clashes: debates in the Senate, tense meetings in royal courts, and arguments in taverns and tents where rankers wonder what any of this means for them. When battles come, they are messy, confusing affairs, with Kane paying as much attention to the struggle to hold a line or keep formation on broken ground as to big tactical moves.

In The Falling Sword, the stakes rise further. Flamininus has suffered setbacks and needs a decisive victory to secure both his career and Rome’s hold over Greece. Philip V is fighting for survival. Felix and Demetrios, now seasoned by hard campaigning, find themselves in the thick of a final, grinding confrontation where the outcome will decide who dominates the Greek world.

Rather than painting one side as purely heroic and the other as villainous, the books show talented, flawed leaders and soldiers on both. The legions have flexibility and discipline; the phalanx has reach and weight, and both are dangerous in the right conditions. If you’re curious about how Rome went from regional power to Mediterranean heavyweight, this series offers that story through characters you come to know, marching and bleeding on either side of the line.
