Revenger

by Alastair Reynolds

2016

In a distant future solar system rebuilt from rubble, sisters Adrana and Arafura Ness sign on to a treasure hunting ship that cracks open sealed baubles for ancient tech. Their first voyage ends in betrayal and bloodshed, leaving Fura determined to hunt down the legendary pirate Bosa Sennen.

Series background & context

The Revenger books are set in the Congregation, a far future version of our solar system that has been broken down and rebuilt over many cycles called Occupations. Planets have been smashed into swarms of artificial habitats, old technologies lie buried in sealed baubles, and the remnants of humanity scrape a living by picking over the past.

Into this strange, antique cosmos come the Ness sisters, Adrana and Arafura, teenagers from a once comfortable family who sign on to a privateer ship to earn money and escape boredom. Their knack for reading alien skulls, a form of faster than light communication, makes them valuable, but also puts them in the sights of infamous pirate Bosa Sennen.

Revenger follows Fura as a bad decision leads to betrayal, slaughter, and a single minded quest for payback. The story reads like a classic nautical adventure crossed with gothic horror and salvage SF, full of boarding actions, decaying space towns, and rumours about the true nature of the currency like quoins and the ancient forces behind them.

In Shadow Captain and Bone Silence the focus widens. The sisters now command their own vessel and live with the scars, both physical and moral, of what has happened to them. They explore new systems of law and religion within the Congregation, discover how deep the manipulation of history runs, and begin to see what the Occupations really are.

Although the books are often discussed as young adult friendly, they do not pull many punches. They deal with trauma, loyalty, and revenge alongside the thrills of cracking open dangerous baubles and racing rival crews to forgotten treasure.

As a series Revenger offers a satisfying beginning, middle, and end across three volumes. You can come for the swashbuckling energy and strange artefacts and stay for the slow reveal of who is really steering the Congregation and what price the Ness sisters are willing to pay to change its future.
