The Revenger Books in Order

The Revenger series follows Mike Sartain, one of Frank Leslie's hottest-blooded western heroes. Sartain is a Cajun drifter with a soldier's past, a private wound that never really closes, and a reputation that keeps trouble riding behind him. He is not a clean-cut lawman or a quiet ranch hand hoping for better days. He is a wanted man who keeps moving because standing still would get him killed.

His life starts a long way from the cattle towns and mountain camps of the West. Sartain grows up in New Orleans's French Quarter, learns early how to fight, and joins the Confederacy while still young. After the Civil War he heads west and serves with the frontier cavalry. Then the event that shapes the whole series hits him. Wounded in Arizona, he is nursed back to health by an old prospector and the man's granddaughter, Jewel. When both are murdered, and Jewel is carrying his child, Sartain turns avenger. From then on, he lives under a dead-or-alive price and a personal code built around payback.

That backstory is what gives the series its engine. Mike is always traveling forward, but he is never really done with the past. Bounty hunters, lawmen, old enemies, and the consequences of his own violence stay close. At the same time, other people keep asking for his help. So the pattern of these books becomes clear very quickly. Sartain rides into a town, camp, or stretch of border country, thinks he may just pass through, and gets dragged into somebody else's trap, feud, missing-person hunt, or revenge job.

The tone is rough, adult, and unapologetically pulpy. These books move fast. They mix gunfights, pursuit, hidden motives, beautiful but dangerous strangers, and a lot of frontier sweat and dust. The women in Mike's orbit are rarely just background scenery. They are often part of the trouble, part of the temptation, or both. That gives the series a different feel from Yakima Henry. Sartain's world runs hotter, meaner, and more openly sensual.

The books gathered in Revenger and Six in the Wheel show that pattern well. One story may trap Mike in an old personal ambush. The next may send him after missing men, buried gold, or a family feud that should have stayed buried. The settings shift through Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico, but the pressure stays the same. Mike never knows whether the next woman, sheriff, rancher, or grieving relative needs saving, wants hiring, or intends to put a bullet in him.

If you want a western series built on motion, appetite, and hard revenge, this is the one. Mike Sartain is not looking for redemption in any soft or tidy sense. He is trying to live with what has already been taken from him, and he keeps measuring the world by who deserves mercy and who does not. That makes The Revenger less like a traditional law-and-order western and more like a string of frontier reckonings. Once you meet Mike, the title makes perfect sense.
