Machine Vendetta

by Alastair Reynolds

2024

In the final Prefect Dreyfus novel, Tom Dreyfus investigates the suspicious death of fellow prefect Ingvar Tench just as new political shocks hit the already fragile Glitter Band. Old artificial intelligences, buried secrets, and simmering grudges collide in a case that forces Dreyfus to question what Panoply should become.

2

Elysium Fire

by Alastair Reynolds

2018

Two years after Aurora Rising, senior prefect Tom Dreyfus faces a new crisis as citizens across the Glitter Band begin to die when their neural implants overheat. While panic spreads and habitats threaten to secede from Panoply's authority, Dreyfus has to untangle a plot that reaches back into his own organisation's past.

3

Aurora Rising

by Alastair Reynolds

2007

Senior prefect Tom Dreyfus polices the democratic Glitter Band, a ring of ten thousand orbital habitats around Yellowstone. A shattered station and a subtle vote rigging scheme lead him toward a rogue artificial intelligence that may be willing to tear the system apart to save it.

Series background & context

The Prefect Dreyfus Emergencies sequence steps sideways inside the Revelation Space universe to focus on law, politics, and the price of security. It is set in the Glitter Band, ten thousand orbital habitats circling the planet Yellowstone, linked by constant voting and augmented reality.

Tom Dreyfus is a senior prefect in Panoply, the organisation that safeguards those votes and enforces the basic rights that keep the Glitter Band functioning. Prefects are not traditional cops. Their main job is to stop people tampering with the democratic machinery and to keep citizens connected to information.

In Aurora Rising (originally published as The Prefect), a destroyed habitat and a subtle vote rigging scheme lead Dreyfus into a conspiracy that reaches back to a dangerous artificial intelligence and forward to the possible end of the Glitter Band itself. The book reads like a police procedural that slowly widens into full blown space opera.

Elysium Fire and Machine Vendetta pick up the aftermath. Seemingly random deaths, populist agitation against Panoply, and old vendettas inside the organisation all start to overlap. Dreyfus and his colleagues have to solve murders, manage political crises, and decide how far they are willing to bend their own rules to stop something worse.

The series spends a lot of time inside Panoply, following field agents, analysts, and administrators as they argue, improvise, and make mistakes. You see how a society that prides itself on radical freedom is held together by fragile technical and legal systems, and how easily those can be turned against it.

In tone these books are lighter on cosmic horror than the Inhibitor novels and heavier on character work, investigation, and tense set pieces inside elaborate habitats. They are a good choice if you want Reynolds' intricate worldbuilding and hard science, framed through the lens of a small group of people trying to hold a complex civilisation together.
