Series background & context
The Red Rising graphic novels are prequels to the main saga, and they focus on a character readers of the novels already know from a very different angle. Instead of beginning with Darrow, these books go backward and follow Fitchner au Barca, a rough-edged Gold who will one day become one of the most important figures in the rebellion. If the novels are about revolution in full flame, the graphic novels are about the sparks.
At the heart of the story is Fitchner's forbidden relationship with Bryn, a Red woman in a society that treats that kind of love as both scandal and crime. Their bond gives the series its emotional center, and it also explains why Fitchner can never fit neatly inside the world he was born to serve. He is still dangerous, still ambitious, and still very much a product of Gold culture, but he is no longer willing to accept the Society's rules as fixed. That tension drives everything.
These books show how the Sons of Ares begin to take shape before Darrow ever enters the picture. You see covert meetings, early cells, sabotage, private vendettas, and the practical mess of trying to build a movement under constant surveillance. The setting stretches across the same harsh solar system as the novels, but the scale feels more intimate at first. There is less fleet warfare and more pressure in alleys, offices, ships, and secret corners where one mistake can cost a family, a mission, or a life.
They are prequels, but they are not side notes.
Wrath pushes the story further into revenge and pursuit. Fitchner and the early Sons go after the Golds who shattered his family, and what could have stayed personal starts becoming political. By the time you reach Forbidden Song, the series leans even harder into planning, misdirection, and risky operations. There is a caper streak to parts of it, but the stakes stay serious. Every act of defiance lands inside a system built to crush it.
In tone, these graphic novels are a little tighter and more immediate than the main novels, but they share the same interest in loyalty, class, power, and the cost of resistance. They work best if you have at least some feel for the world of Red Rising, because much of the pleasure comes from seeing how later legends were made, and how messy those origins really were. If you want backstory, emotional bruises, and the early anatomy of rebellion, this is where to look.
