Recon Books in Order

The older Recon sequence follows Tyler Callas, the privileged son of a powerful corporate executive, as he throws away the life planned for him and enlists under the name Randall Munroe. That false identity gives the series its core tension. Munroe is trying to become the soldier he wants to be while hiding the person he was born to be.

That works especially well in Rick Partlow's future.

His worlds often divide sharply between the powerful and everyone else, and Munroe stands right on that fault line. He knows how the elite think because he came from them. He also learns what life is like for the Marines who actually fight the Commonwealth's wars. That makes the series part war story, part class story, and part identity story.

Most of the action runs through Force Recon missions behind enemy lines during the Tahni war. The operations are dangerous, the stakes are immediate, and Munroe is the kind of character who keeps finding himself in situations where one mistake can expose him from either direction. If the enemy does not kill him, his own past might.

If the title lineup looks unfamiliar, that is because some of these books were later reissued under Drop Trooper: Recon. But the appeal is the same in either form: a smart military SF series about covert operations, divided loyalties, and a protagonist who is always one step away from losing everything.
