The Rebel Mechanics series is a young adult alternate-history adventure set in an 1888 America where the Revolution never succeeded. Verity Newton arrives in New York hoping for a respectable job as a governess. She is smart, well educated, and determined to make her own way despite having little money. Instead of finding a quiet household, she crosses paths with the Rebel Mechanics, a group of engineers and inventors using steam power and scientific skill to challenge the magical British system.

Verity takes a post in the household of Lord Henry, a young Magister with responsibilities of his own. That puts her in an awkward but useful position. She has access to the polished world of colonial power while building ties with rebels who see that world very differently. Her work soon involves coded messages, secret meetings, dangerous travel, and decisions about who deserves her trust.

The series mixes the manners and clothing of a Victorian-style setting with gadgets, experimental transport, and political resistance. The alternate history matters because magic has helped preserve an unfair social order for generations. The Mechanics believe that inventions can give ordinary people leverage. Some Magisters also want change, but getting groups with different advantages and fears to work together is not simple.

Revolution is messy work.

In Rebel Mechanics, Verity is drawn into the New York movement and begins to understand how much is at stake. Rebel Magisters broadens the story as Verity and Henry seek allies in other colonies, including people who can work from inside the magical establishment. Rebels Rising brings the pressure of the rebellion closer, with loyalties, secrets, and the future of the movement on the line.

There is romance in the series, but it does not replace the political story. Verity's feelings and friendships complicate her choices because the people she cares about do not always share the same position or safety. The books are a good choice for readers who enjoy a fast-moving blend of steampunk, alternate history, espionage, and a young heroine learning how to act when staying neutral is no longer possible.
