Series background & context
The Lucky Lexie Mysteries are cozy paranormal whodunits set in Stirling Mills, a small Texas town with more secrets than its tidy streets first suggest. The books follow Alexa "Lexie" Lincoln, a reporter whose career takes a sharp turn after she loses her job and lands an interview at the local newspaper. The interview goes very badly, very quickly, when she finds the editor dead.
Lexie is not only trying to keep a new job and prove she did not commit murder. She can see and talk to ghosts.
That ability makes her useful, but it is not something she can explain to just anyone. The town has its own unusual history, and many residents have inherited odd talents from ancestors connected to a stranded circus sideshow. Ghosts, psychic gifts, old grudges, and local legends are all part of the background noise in Stirling Mills. Lexie still has to do the work of a reporter, though: ask questions, follow leads, and figure out who benefits when someone lies.
The first book, Interview with a Dead Editor, establishes the mix of newsroom life, small-town connections, and supernatural help. Later cases take Lexie from suspicious crystals and a car pulled from a river to a missing visitor, a haunted inn, and holiday trouble. Each mystery has its own crime to solve, so the books work as individual investigations, but reading in order lets the town and its regular cast build naturally.
The tone stays light even when the stakes get serious. Lexie is curious, stubborn, and often caught between being a responsible journalist and knowing information she cannot safely reveal. Her ghostly sources can point her in a direction, but they do not hand her a neat solution. That keeps the mysteries grounded in clues, motives, and the messy ties between neighbors.
Stirling Mills is a character in its own right.
The series is a good fit for readers who want an easygoing mystery with a paranormal twist, rather than horror. There are murders and real danger, but the emphasis is on community, clever problem-solving, and the pleasure of returning to familiar people. Expect newspaper deadlines, eccentric locals, spirits who have opinions, and a heroine who keeps finding trouble because she cannot ignore a story that needs the truth.
