Author bio

Ramy Vance was born in Cairo and grew up across Bahrain and Canada. Moving between countries seems to have left a mark on his fiction. His books are full of people caught between worlds, between identities, and between the ordinary and the impossible.

That restlessness shows up everywhere.

Before he became known for fast, funny fantasy and science fiction, he spent part of his early adult life teaching English in Japan. He used the quiet gaps in that job to read hard and write daily, which gave him the kind of steady writing habit that matters more than inspiration. He also moved deep into publishing, especially Arabic ebooks, and helped build a company in that space. For Vance, writing and publishing were never totally separate. One kept feeding the other.

For a while, business took over and fiction had to wait. Then, in 2015, when he learned he was about to become a father, he returned to novel writing with real urgency. That push turned into a long run of books, and it also seems to have sharpened the thing readers now recognize in his work, momentum. His stories do not loiter.

A few books later came GoneGodWorld, the opening Paradise Lot novel. It starts with a killer premise: the gods leave, mythic creatures get dumped onto Earth, and Jean-Luc Matthias, a former monster-hunter, ends up running a hotel for supernatural refugees. Readers who click with Vance usually like the same things there, quick banter, weird creatures treated like difficult neighbors, and a plot that keeps widening without losing its sense of fun.

He kept building from there. Mortality Bites follows Katrina Darling, an ex-vampire trying to survive university life after becoming human again. The Good Troll Detective leans into paranormal mystery with a half-troll heroine and a hidden magical underworld. Die Again to Save the World swerves into time-loop science fiction with Rueben Peet, a hero who keeps resetting after death and never quite feels qualified for the job. And The First Human Rider shows another side of his work, dragons, cadets, and big adventure with the stakes climbing fast.

He likes taking a pulpy hook and seeing how far it can run.

Across the different series, some patterns keep returning. Vance likes found families, outsiders, supernatural systems colliding with everyday life, and heroes who are funny because they are stressed, not because nothing matters. Even when the books get darker, there is usually some sideways joke, some stubborn human moment, or some oddball creature keeping the story grounded. He has also published under both R.E. Vance and Ramy Vance, which explains why his catalog can look split in two until you start reading.

That split is more practical than creative.

He has even written about the writing life directly. That makes sense. His career has one foot in storytelling and one foot in the mechanics of publishing, and that mix helps explain why his fiction is so story-first and forward-moving. He knows how books are built, but he never lets the scaffolding show for long.

Now he lives in Edinburgh with his wife, children, and the imaginary dog he has joked about in more than one bio. He moved there in 2013 and has spoken about wanting to stay. Edinburgh suits the work. It is old, atmospheric, a little mischievous, and a pretty good home base for a writer who keeps returning to monsters, gods, and the people left to deal with them.
