Ray Dudgeon is the Chicago private investigator at the center of Sean Chercover's hardboiled crime stories. Before becoming a PI, Ray worked as a newspaper reporter, and that past still shapes how he handles a case. He asks questions, follows leads that other people would rather bury, and has a hard time walking away when someone is being used or threatened.

That makes him useful. It also makes his life difficult.

The series begins with Big City, Bad Blood. Ray accepts a bodyguard job for Bob Loniski, a Hollywood locations manager who has seen something he should not have seen while working in Chicago. What begins as protection for a frightened witness opens into murder, sexual blackmail, political corruption, and a power struggle involving the Chicago Outfit, the police, and federal agents.

Ray wants to do honest work in a city where almost everyone seems to have a hidden angle. As the case grows, he has to decide who deserves loyalty and what he is willing to risk to keep a client alive. Chicago is central to the story, not simply a backdrop. Its neighborhoods, institutions, and criminal networks all help create the pressure around Ray.

In Trigger City, he is still carrying the effects of his first major case when retired Army intelligence colonel Isaac Richmond asks him to investigate his daughter's death. The police believe it was a straightforward murder, but Ray finds that the woman led a secret life connected to covert intelligence. His search takes him into military contracting, homeland security politics, and a fight in which he could become expendable.

The shorter Ray Dudgeon stories show the same stubborn side of the character. One Serving of Bad Luck finds him seeking justice for a paraplegic librarian, while The Non Compos Mentis Blues starts with an infidelity investigation and turns into something much darker. Ray may be bruised, cynical, and sometimes wrong, but he keeps trying to do the right thing.

These are lean, tense private-eye stories with a strong sense of place. The cases involve corruption and big institutions, yet the heart of each one is usually personal: a frightened witness, a grieving parent, a client with nowhere else to turn.
