Sean Chercover Books in Order

Sean Chercover grew up in Toronto and spent childhood summers in Georgia. As a teenager, he worked in television in Toronto and Montreal, then spent time on an underwater documentary series after high school. He learned early that a story can come from almost anywhere.

He later earned a Liberal Arts degree from Columbia College Chicago and trained as a private investigator. Chercover worked PI jobs in both Chicago and New Orleans, experiences that gave his crime fiction a practical feel and a close view of the people living around trouble.

His resume also includes television writing, video editing, waiting tables, selling encyclopedias, driving trucks, and working as a nightclub magician. For a while, he wrote corporate press releases, but eventually decided he had enough of that work and turned seriously to fiction.

That was the better fit.

Chercover's first novel, Big City, Bad Blood, introduced Ray Dudgeon, a former newspaper reporter working as a private detective in Chicago. Ray takes what looks like a straightforward protection job and finds himself caught between the police, federal agents, political operators, and the mob. The book won several awards for a first novel, including the Shamus Award.

Ray returned in Trigger City, where a grieving father hires him to look into his daughter's apparently solved murder. The case pulls Ray into the world of military contractors and intelligence work. The novel won the Dilys Award, and it shows the kind of case Chercover likes to build, one with personal stakes at the center and much larger forces pressing in from every side.

He later began the Daniel Byrne trilogy with The Trinity Game. Daniel is a former Vatican investigator whose job was to test claims of miracles, until a case involving his own uncle breaks open questions he cannot easily explain. The Devil's Game and The Savior's Game take Daniel into conspiracies, visions of the future, outbreaks, and threats that reach far beyond one person's life.

Chercover also writes short fiction. Stories collected in Eight Lies (About the Truth) include Ray Dudgeon cases, a story about Ray's friend Gravedigger Peace, and standalone pieces that range from hardboiled crime to uneasy emotional suspense. His short work has earned the Anthony Award and the CWA Short Story Dagger, among other honors.

Chicago matters in his books.

It is not just scenery, but a place of neighborhoods, power brokers, weary working people, and choices that get complicated fast. Across his novels and stories, readers will find private investigators, people with messy pasts, ordinary clients in over their heads, and characters trying to do one decent thing when decency carries a price.

Chercover lives in Toronto with his wife and son. His author biography suggests that, when he is not writing or traveling, he may well be out riding his bike.
