Series background & context

Raven & Wren is Burke's Victorian mystery series, and it gives her work a noticeably different rhythm. The romance is still there, but the books are driven just as much by investigation. At the center are private investigator Matilda Wren and Hadrian Becket, Earl of Ravenhurst, whose life changes after he is attacked and left with the unsettling ability to glimpse memories through objects and places.

That paranormal note stays light but important.

Tilda is the practical half of the partnership. She is observant, determined, and already working cases in a world that does not make such work easy for women. Hadrian brings social reach, intelligence, and his deeply inconvenient new gift. Together, they make a classic solving duo: one grounded, one haunted, both more capable than they first appear.

The series is set in Victorian London, and the city matters. These are not decorative mysteries. Burke uses the streets, households, clubs, and social layers of London to shape the cases. Murder investigations, domestic secrets, fraud, old crimes, and buried family history all have room to surface. The world feels busy and shadowed in the right way.

Just as satisfying is the slow-burn relationship between Tilda and Hadrian. Burke does not rush it. Trust builds case by case, and that patience suits the series. Readers who like a partnership that deepens over time, rather than a romance that resolves immediately, usually find a lot to enjoy here.

Start with A Whisper of Death, then continue in order. The books work best as a sequence, because both the investigations and the personal stakes keep building. If you want historical mystery first, romance close behind, and just a touch of the uncanny, Raven & Wren is one of Burke's most appealing series.
