Author bio

Rachel Lynch grew up in Cumbria, where the lakes and fells that surrounded her childhood would one day become the backdrop to her crime novels.

As a kid she spent weekends walking the hills and watching the weather roll over the water, long before she knew those landscapes would hold crime scenes and police tape. That sense of beauty sitting right next to danger runs through almost everything she writes.

After studying history at Lancaster University, she moved south to London to train as a teacher. There she taught history in secondary schools, swapped hiking boots for the Underground, and married an army officer whose job meant the family rarely stayed in one place for long.

For more than a decade she followed that work around the world, raising a young family and learning what constant change feels like.

When her children were small she stepped away from the classroom, retrained in personal training and sports therapy, and built a different kind of career. Eventually, though, the pull of story won out. She published her first novel in 2014 and, a couple of years later, began writing full-time.

Crime fiction turned out to be the perfect home for her mix of curiosity, empathy and fascination with dark corners. In the DI Kelly Porter series, beginning with Dark Game, she sends a determined detective back to Cumbria after a bruising spell with London's Metropolitan Police. The books dive into organised crime, family secrets and the way small communities can hide very big sins, all against the rugged backdrop of the Lake District.

Kelly's later investigations in novels like Deep Fear, Dead End, Lost Cause and Silent Bones push further into that territory: cold cases that resurface, predators who target the vulnerable, and institutions that fail the people they are meant to protect. Readers come back not just for the puzzles, but for Kelly herself a woman trying to do the right thing while juggling grief, complicated family ties and the messy business of moving on.

Lynch also writes beyond Cumbria. In the Helen Scott Royal Military Police thrillers, The Rift and The Line, she draws on years of life as an army wife to follow a senior investigator through NATO summits, military bases and politically sensitive crime scenes. Those books lean into questions of duty, hierarchy and what happens when the truth threatens careers at the highest level.

Her standalones give her room to play with different kinds of tension. The Rich is a psychological thriller set among the wealthy and well-connected, where a London psychologist realises the secrets her clients share on the couch may be tied to murder. The Secret Inheritance turns inward, using a remote family estate and a long-buried tragedy to explore guilt, money and what silence can cost over a lifetime.

Today Lynch lives near London with her husband, two children and a much-loved terrier. Her books have sold more than a million copies, and she still draws heavily on the landscapes that shaped her, especially the lakes and fells of Cumbria. Through her podcast The Killer Storyteller, she now talks directly with readers about how the stories come together from the first glimmer of an idea to the final twist on the last page.
