Series background & context

The Cass Lynch Mysteries, also known as the Shetland Sailing Mysteries, follow an independent young skipper who is more at home on the water than on land. Cass lives aboard her yacht Khalida and scrapes together a living with sailing jobs around the Scottish coast. Wherever she moors, trouble has a habit of finding her, usually in the shape of a body and an awkward question from the police.

In the first book, Death on a Longship, Cass returns unwillingly to her native Shetland to skipper a replica Viking longship for a film shoot, only to find a dead woman on board and herself under suspicion. Over the next few novels she is drawn further back into island life, from missing yachts and Neolithic tombs to eerie deaths linked to Scalloway's witch-burning past and a skeleton discovered on a Highland hillside at Christmas.

At the heart of the series is the partnership between Cass and DI Gavin Macrae, an Inverness detective with roots in the West Highlands. Their relationship grows slowly from wary allies to something more personal, but the books never lose sight of the mysteries in front of them. Each case stands alone, so you can start almost anywhere, yet regular readers see friendships deepen and long-running tensions play out across the sequence.

Setting is as important as plot. Every story homes in on a particular corner of Shetland and a particular time of year: summer agricultural shows and sailing regattas, dark winter nights lit by fire festivals, folk music gatherings, or the brief blaze of the northern summer. Taylor uses her sailing experience to put readers on deck with Cass, handling tides, fog and sudden squalls in narrow sounds and open sea.

The books also play with the line between folklore and reality. Cass may hear talk of trows, water-horses, Viking ghosts or black magic, but the answers she uncovers are rooted firmly in human motives such as jealousy, old betrayals and the pull of money. Many of the mysteries unfold in closed-circle settings like tall ships, remote islands, clifftop cottages or snowbound lanes, where everyone present could be both witness and suspect.

As the series goes on, the stories widen their horizons without losing their Shetland core. Cass spends time working as an officer on the Norwegian sail-training ship Sorlandet, races across the North Atlantic, and sails to remote places such as St Kilda, yet she keeps being drawn back to the islands, to family, friends and a community that can be both close-knit and claustrophobic.

Taken together, the Cass Lynch Mysteries offer traditional puzzle plots, a richly drawn maritime setting and a cast of recurring characters who feel like neighbours in a small, wind-battered place. Whether you are drawn in by boats, Scottish islands or twisty whodunits, the series is designed to let you step aboard at almost any point and still feel you have a firm hand on the tiller.
