Rab Sinclair Western Books in Order

Rab Sinclair is one of Robert Peecher's quieter Western leads, which is part of why he works so well. He is not flashy. He knows the land, reads people carefully, and tends to keep his own counsel until trouble forces his hand. When he does move, though, he moves with purpose.

The books place him in big country, the Santa Fe Trail, New Mexico, the Llano Estacado, ranch land, open prairie. That wide setting gives the series a classic feel, but the stories are not simple good-guy-against-bad-guy rides. Rab is often hired as a guide or drawn into situations where the right answer is not obvious and somebody innocent may still pay for it.

He is a practical man with a conscience.

That combination gives the series its tone. A Trail Too Far plays with wagon-train danger and frontier violence. The Glorieta Grudge brings old hatred back into Rab's life. A Vast and Desolate Land is even starker, asking what justice means when the wrong man is standing in the place set aside for punishment. By the time you get to A Violent Outcome, the series has built a solid picture of a man who is steady under pressure but not untouched by it.

If you like Westerns with open skies, trail travel, moral pressure, and a lead who feels competent without feeling invincible, Rab Sinclair is easy to settle into. These books have action, but they are just as interested in restraint, judgment, and the moment when a man decides he can no longer stand aside.
