Barbara Graham's Quilted Mysteries follow Theo and Tony Abernathy, a married couple in the small East Tennessee community of Silersville, in Park County. Tony is the county sheriff. Theo owns a quilt shop, raises their family, and has a gift for hearing the things people say when they think they are only making conversation.

That makes Theo's shop a useful place to be when trouble starts.

Tony handles the official side of each case, from interviewing witnesses to sorting through the scattered crimes that can pile up in a rural county. Theo is not a detective in the formal sense, but she notices people, asks questions, and brings together local information that might otherwise be dismissed as gossip. Their investigations often run on separate tracks before the clues begin to meet.

The series opens with Murder By Serpents, when a snake-handling preacher is killed and Tony has to look past the county's many distractions to find the truth. Later books bring crimes connected to an antique quilt, a quilting retreat, a spring festival, a summer celebration, a snowbound Halloween, and a Valentine's Day event. The mysteries change from book to book, but Park County's overlapping relationships, rivalries, secrets, and eccentric residents keep the setting connected.

These are cozy mysteries with a police-procedural streak. Tony is a working sheriff, so readers see the pressure of dealing with both serious violence and the everyday problems that land on a small department's doorstep. At the same time, the books keep a light touch through community squabbles, strange local characters, and Theo's down-to-earth view of what is happening around her.
