Barbara Graham Books in Order

Barbara Graham grew up in the Texas Panhandle, though her childhood also included stretches in San Diego and Pearl Harbor while her father served in the Navy. Those early changes of scene may help explain why she later described herself as someone who had trouble staying in one place for long.

After college in Denver, a professor convinced her that writing was not a sensible path. Graham went another way for a while, moving on a whim to New Orleans and later spending time in East Tennessee. She kept collecting places, jobs, and stories.

She worked in the travel industry, taught ballet, and raised a family. But writing never really left the picture. Graham wrote several early novels that did not find a publisher, the kind of necessary practice that can feel discouraging while it is happening and useful only in hindsight.

Eventually, one of those stories stuck.

Her first published mystery, Murder By Serpents, introduced Sheriff Tony Abernathy and his wife, Theo, a quilt-shop owner in rural East Tennessee. The novel starts with the murder of a snake-handling preacher and sets the pattern for the books that followed: local gossip, odd crimes, difficult weather, a busy sheriff, and quiltmaking woven into the action.

East Tennessee became especially important to Graham's fiction. Her time there helped inspire Silersville and Park County, the small, fictional community at the center of the Quilted Mysteries. It is a place where people know one another's business, usually whether they want to or not, and where Tony's official investigations often overlap with what Theo hears in her shop.

The series continued with Murder by Artifact, Murder by Music, Murder by Vegetable, Murder by Sunlight, Murder by Gravity, and Murder by Kindness. Each book brings a fresh case to Tony's desk, while Theo works around family life, quilting, and the useful information that comes from a well-placed conversation. The books also include clues for a mystery quilt pattern, a small extra that reflects Graham's own long-running interest in quilting.

The tone is cozy but not entirely weightless. Tony is a county sheriff, so the stories make room for real police work alongside the comic, messy side of small-town life. Readers who enjoy a married couple working from different angles, a strong regional setting, and mysteries with more than one problem brewing at once will find plenty to follow.

Wyoming has long been home for Graham, and quilting has remained part of her life beyond the novels. She has designed mystery-quilt material for fellow quilters as well as building it into Theo and Tony Abernathy's cases.

Her books make room for murder, mayhem, and fabric scraps. It is a practical combination, and it suits Park County nicely.
