Theo Tan and the Fox Spirit

by Jesse Q Sutanto

2022

Chinese American gamer Theo Tan never wanted a spirit companion, but after his older brother dies he inherits Kai, a prickly fox spirit. Following clues in his brother’s coded journal sends them to a heritage summer camp and into a mystery tied to a powerful tech-magic company.

Series background & context

On the surface, the Theo Tan books are fast-paced fantasy adventures full of spells, fox spirits, and demon kings. Underneath, they are also about a Chinese American boy figuring out how grief, heritage, and magic are all tangled together.

In Theo Tan and the Fox Spirit, Theo is convinced he wants an ordinary life. He would rather play video games, hang out at conventions, and use simple spell-casting pendants like every other kid in his near-future world. When his older brother Jamie dies, Theo unexpectedly inherits Jamie’s fox spirit companion, Kai. The pair have never liked each other, and their forced bond is prickly from the start. Then Theo discovers that the journal Jamie left behind is crammed with codes and clues that point to something dangerous at the powerful corporation where Jamie interned.

Cracking that mystery means gaining admission to the Know Your Roots summer camp, a competitive program meant to connect kids with Chinese and Indian cultures through language, history, and magical traditions. Theo is reluctant to lean into any of it; he has spent years dodging questions about his background. Watching him fumble, resist, and slowly find pride in pieces of his heritage is as important as the corporate conspiracy he and Kai are trying to expose.

The sequel, Theo Tan and the Iron Fan, raises both the stakes and the scale of the world. After the events of the first book, Theo and Kai learn that Jamie’s spirit is trapped in Diyu, the Chinese realm of the dead, waiting for judgment. Determined to bring him home, they join friends on a journey that takes them straight into the layered courts of the underworld, where demon kings, paperwork, and old grudges make every step risky. The story mixes Chinese myth with video game logic and school-friend banter, keeping the tone lively even as it deals with loss.

Sutanto writes the series with a lot of humor. Kai’s snarky commentary, Theo’s missteps, and the ordinary squabbles among friends sit next to moments of real sadness and fear. The books talk frankly about what it means to feel not enough of any one culture, how families keep secrets to try to protect each other, and how kids can carry heavy responsibilities and still find joy.

The Theo Tan books are a good fit for readers who enjoy mythology-based adventures and magic systems that bump up against modern technology. Each novel tells a complete story, but the emotional arc of Theo and Kai’s partnership, and Theo’s relationship to his family history, is strongest if you start from the beginning and follow their journey in order.
