Series background & context

Queen of the Damned is a reverse harem urban fantasy that flips the usual Four Horsemen prophecy on its head. At the center is Ruby Morningstar, a half succubus who runs a tattoo shop in Portland, has a banshee best friend, a trash panda pet raccoon and a talent for attracting the wrong kind of attention.

In Lucifer's Daughter Ruby thinks she understands her life, she is a low level demon trying to stay off Heaven's radar while keeping her business afloat and dodging a stalker ex. That illusion shatters when a stranger bails her out of jail and she discovers that the Four Horsemen are not the bringers of the apocalypse at all. She is. Ruby is Lucifer's heir, and the legacy he left behind is far messier than anyone prepared her for.

Wicked Games picks up as Ruby grapples with the title of Hell's Queen in waiting. The mark she inherited from her father draws old enemies out of hiding and awakens a beast inside her, a darker alter ego with very firm opinions about what to do with the Horsemen now circling her life. Between political plots, missing friends and a fire she can barely control, ruling is the last thing she wants.

In Infernal Desires and Brimstone Nightmares the story expands beyond Portland. Ruby's acceptance of her power makes her a target for forces that want to control the underworld or burn it down completely. New Orleans, rogue demons and chaotic magic all test the fragile trust between her and the Horsemen, who have to decide whether they are protectors, partners or obstacles.

Throughout the series the tone swings between laugh out loud banter and genuinely dark moments. Ruby copes with trauma and impossible choices using sarcasm, bad decisions and fierce loyalty to the people she claims as hers. The Horsemen are each dangerous in their own way, but the romance builds slowly, giving space for found family dynamics, consent and emotional fallout.

Queen of the Damned is a good fit if you enjoy end of the world stakes bundled with irreverent humor, explicit romance and a heroine who is just as likely to start a bar fight as she is to save the world. Read the books in order beginning with Lucifer's Daughter to watch Ruby grow from reluctant heir to something far more terrifying.
