Series background & context
Dark Maji is Kel Carpenter's sweeping dark fantasy saga co-written in parts with Lucy Smoke. Set on the continent of Siria, it follows Quinn Darkova, a former slave whose rare magic and stubborn refusal to break make her both a weapon and a threat.
In Fortune Favors the Cruel Quinn claws her way out of bondage with one goal, vengeance on the people who sold her. Her plans shift when she collides with Lazarus Fierté, the ruthlessly controlled nobleman who has been searching for a powerful Maji to anchor his rule. Quinn's unstable abilities, and the violent past that forged them, are exactly what he needs to save his fractured kingdom or to destroy it.
The early books throw Quinn and Lazarus together in a world of corrupt courts, blood-soaked battlefields and gods who meddle far too much. Alliances with pirate queens, tribal leaders and backstabbing nobles force Quinn to decide whether she will be Lazarus's weapon, his partner, or something more dangerous than either.
As the series pushes into Blessed be the Wicked and Twisted is the Crown, the scope widens. Political tensions flare, old secrets from Quinn's home of N'skara surface, and the pair face enemies who are just as monstrous as they are. Quinn's loyalty to Lazarus is tested again and again, especially when her power outstrips the control even he thought he had.
For King and Corruption and Long Live the Soulless bring the war for Norcasta and the wider continent to its brutal conclusion. Quinn pays a terrible price for the path she has chosen, Lazarus slides closer to the edge of madness, and divine forces step onto the board. The final book pushes both characters past death itself to answer the series' central question, what, and who, are they willing to sacrifice for the world they want to build.
Across all five novels you can expect morally gray protagonists, graphic magic and a romance that is as much about trust and power as it is about attraction. Dark Maji leans harder into epic fantasy than some of Carpenter's other work, with complex worldbuilding, gods and monsters, and long-term consequences for every bloody choice Quinn and Lazarus make.
