Compromised traps her in a blackmail setup involving a rare manuscript and an AI-guarded archive. Aftershock ties her path more directly to the Historic Crimes Unit and the wider Dan Kotler universe. By the time Echo arrives, Alex is not only dodging hunters, she is chasing a killer who erases victims so thoroughly their digital lives keep going after their real lives end.

That blend is the real hook. The books care about technology, but they also care about identity, power, and the way institutions can fail the people stuck under them. Alex is smart, stubborn, and often one bad decision away from disaster. She is not a cold super-genius. She is more interesting than that.
