Series background & context

Dan Kotler is the center of Kevin Tumlinson's biggest thriller world, and the books know exactly why he works. He is an archaeologist, researcher, and occasional FBI consultant, but more than that he is a magnet for impossible history. If there is an artifact no one can explain, a sealed chamber no one should have found, or a theory respectable experts would rather laugh off, Dan is probably already on the way.

That usually ends badly for him.

The Dan Kotler books are archaeological thrillers with a modern spine. They move through museums, ruins, cities, military archives, and hidden facilities, but the stakes are always current. Old knowledge keeps colliding with present-day greed, terrorism, political influence, or secret societies. Dan is not chasing history as an abstract puzzle. He is usually trying to stop someone from turning it into leverage.

The Coelho Medallion sets the pattern clearly. A stolen artifact suggests Vikings reached deep into North America long before Columbus, and Dan is pulled into kidnappings, FBI suspicion, and a race against a terrorist threat. The Atlantis Riddle follows with mysterious stones, Thomas Edison, corrupt power, and a lost civilization that may not be lost at all. From there, Tumlinson keeps widening the mythology. Isaac Newton, Mayan tombs, forged Antarctic maps, hidden chambers in Manhattan, relic vaults in Arizona, and the oldest temples on Earth all become part of the same larger web.

Dan himself helps hold that web together. He is brilliant, but he is rarely the cool, untouched genius. He gets tired, cornered, blamed, and physically outmatched. He also keeps going. Much of the series' rhythm comes from watching him reason through something outrageous while the people around him are choosing force, panic, or ideology instead. His long-running partnership with FBI agent Roland Denzel gives the books their strongest recurring relationship, and later entries build on that trust in satisfying ways.

There is also a bigger ongoing arc under the individual cases. Orders working in secret, myths with scientific edges, family history, and attempts to reshape civilization keep surfacing in new forms. Some entries stand alone better than others, but reading in order pays off because the world gets denser as it goes. The novellas, like The Brass Hall and The Bones of Saint Nicholas, add texture without derailing the main line.

The tone is fast, puzzle-heavy, and a little pulpy in the best way. Tumlinson likes big ideas, but he delivers them through cliff edges, traps, betrayals, and the constant feeling that the past is not done causing trouble.

If you want the cleanest entry point, start with The Coelho Medallion. If that mix of ancient mystery and modern danger clicks for you, there is a lot of Dan Kotler left to explore.
