Series background & context
Pyper Rayne spins out of the Jade Calhoun world, but it quickly finds its own rhythm. Where Jade's books lean more heavily into her continuing urban-fantasy arc, Pyper's stories feel a little lighter on their feet, with more playful mystery, a little more romantic comedy energy, and plenty of ghost trouble.
Pyper starts as a coffee shop owner in New Orleans whose life changes after one supernatural encounter too many. Suddenly the dead are not staying on their side of the line, and Pyper is stuck figuring out what her new abilities mean. That would be enough on its own, but Chase adds old murders, cursed magic, a witchy love interest, and a cast of friends who are rarely far from the next mess.
These books still use New Orleans well. The city gives the series atmosphere, but Pyper's adventures often have a more sleuthing feel than Jade's. A ghost wants justice. A decades-old crime needs solving. A romantic getaway turns into an investigation. A wedding countdown gets interrupted by murder. The stakes are real, but the tone stays fun and fast.
Because Pyper grows over the course of the series, publication order helps. Her relationship develops, her powers become more central, and the overlap with the wider Bourbon Street world makes the series feel connected without becoming hard to follow. If you already like Jade, Pyper is an easy next stop. If you want a spin-off that stands well on its own, it works that way too.
Start with Spirits, Stilettos and a Silver Bustier. It has the right mix of ghosts, chemistry, humor, and New Orleans weirdness, and it sets up the voice of the series nicely from the beginning.
