Series background & context

The Apple & Kola books follow twin sisters whose bond is tested by rivalry, money, men, and survival. Set first in Harlem, the series begins with Bad Apple, where Apple and Kola are both young, ambitious, and determined not to be overlooked. Their shared history does not make them allies. For much of the story, it gives them a better idea of how to hurt each other.

Apple wants to stay on top.

Kola wants her turn at the crown.

Apple's problems begin when a dangerous deal leaves her owing more than she can easily repay. Kola, meanwhile, is making money through her own escort ring and resents always being compared with her sister. Those pressures turn a private resentment into open conflict. Each sister gains friends, lovers, and business partners, but those relationships come with their own motives and betrayals.

The first four books, Bad Apple, Coca Kola, Checkmate, and Face Off, are built around that fight for control. Apple and Kola move through a world where reputation matters, money brings attention, and personal grudges can become deadly. The series does not treat their rivalry as a one-note feud. Both women make costly decisions, and both have reasons to feel wounded by the other.

The setting expands as the series goes on. On the Run sends the sisters' separate lives through Colombia, New York, and Baltimore, while Unfinished Business asks whether they can finally step away from old fights. By Baddest Apple, the consequences of everything that came before are impossible to ignore. Family, especially the family they have built around themselves, becomes as important as their battle for power.

There is always another score to settle.

The tone is tense, emotional, and fast-moving. Expect crime plots, hard choices, tangled romances, and plenty of characters who see an opportunity in someone else's crisis. The books are connected, and the characters carry emotional and practical baggage from one installment into the next.

Start with Bad Apple. Reading in order makes the changes in Apple and Kola's relationship much more satisfying, because the series tracks them from teenage competitors into adults still wrestling with pride, loyalty, and the damage done by the past.
