Jo Ann Ferguson's Priscilla Flanders series is a Regency romantic-mystery sequence starring Lady Priscilla Flanders and Sir Neville Hathaway. The books combine drawing-room manners, amateur sleuthing, danger, and a relationship that grows while the pair keep finding trouble.
It starts with A Rather Necessary End. The Duke of Meresden is found dead in Priscilla's garden, and Priscilla joins forces with Neville, a friend of her late husband, to uncover the killer. That first case establishes the series formula: a society setting, a suspicious death or threat, and two clever people who cannot quite stay out of the investigation.
They make an excellent team.
Priscilla is curious, capable, and unwilling to accept a neat explanation when the facts do not fit. Neville is her match in nerve and determination. Their attraction is part of the fun, but it does not replace the mystery. Each book gives them a new problem that demands attention, whether it involves a fair, a wedding, a buried secret, or the shadowy world beyond polite society.
The Regency setting matters. Reputation has consequences, servants overhear more than anyone expects, and a proper invitation can conceal a very improper motive. Ferguson uses those rules to create both romantic tension and obstacles for her amateur detectives. Priscilla and Neville have to work around the limits placed on them while deciding whom to trust.
The tone is lively rather than grim. There are murders and genuine risks, but the books make room for banter, domestic moments, and the pleasure of watching a devoted couple solve problems together. Later entries, including Gentleman's Master and Fool's Paradise, find Priscilla and Neville married, but still far from settled.
Read in publication order. Begin with A Rather Necessary End, then continue with Grave Intentions, Faire Game, and The Greatest Possible Mischief. The cases stand on their own, but the relationship rewards a chronological reading.
