Author bio
Jo Ann Ferguson was born in Granville, New York, on October 23, 1953. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a seamstress, and she grew up in a family where stories had room to take root.
She has recalled making up tales for her sister while they sat outside on summer days. Her first published byline came early, at age twelve, in nonfiction. That start stuck with her.
Ferguson studied at the State University College at Potsdam, earning a bachelor's degree in 1974. Before her fiction career took off, she also served in the U.S. Army as a quartermaster officer. She was the first and only woman in her unit, an experience that gave her a practical sense of work, travel, and getting on with the job.
Then came the romances.
Beginning in the late 1980s, Ferguson built a large catalog of historical love stories, especially traditional Regencies. Her books often put capable women beside men who have secrets, responsibilities, or a little too much confidence. The result is usually a mix of sharp conversation, family complications, mystery, and a hard-won happy ending.
Her early Foxbridge Legacy novels, including Sybill, Rebecca, and Mariel, lean into family history and old secrets. The Wolfe Family books, beginning with The Smithfield Bargain, bring together marriage bargains, unexpected danger, and the social rules of Regency England. In the Haven trilogy, starting with Twice Blessed, she moves to 1870s Indiana, where people trying to outrun their pasts find a close-knit town that notices everything.
Ferguson also enjoys giving romance a mystery problem to solve. Her Lady Priscilla Flanders books pair Lady Priscilla with Sir Neville Hathaway in Regency cases involving murder, missing clues, highwaymen, and inconvenient danger. A Rather Necessary End begins their partnership, while later books such as Grave Intentions, Faire Game, and Gentleman's Master keep the couple busy when they would probably prefer a quiet day.
She has written under several names, including J.A. Ferguson, Joanna Hampton, Jo Ann Brown, Jocelyn Kelley, and Rebecca North. Different names gave her room to work in different corners of romance, from paranormal stories to quilt-centered fiction and Amish-inspired novels. As Marianne Ellis, alongside Cameron Dokey, she helped create the Amish Seasons novels Summer Promise and Autumn Grace.
Research is part of the fun for Ferguson. Her work has drawn on subjects as varied as Regency customs, antique weapons, ghosts, languages, and the places where her stories unfold. She also contributed to a reference work on the English Regency period, which helps explain the lived-in details of her historical settings.
She has spent time teaching creative writing and helped establish romance-writing courses at Brown University. She also served Romance Writers of America in local and national roles, including as national president, and received service honors for that volunteer work.
Across historical romance, romantic suspense, paranormal stories, and family-centered fiction, Ferguson's books return to a simple question: what happens when a person who expects to manage alone has to trust someone else? It is a good question for a love story, and she has found many ways to ask it.
