Series background & context
Fourteen years before the Medusa Project books begin, a scientist secretly altered a handful of embryos with a gene designed to unlock psychic abilities. Those babies grew up scattered across Europe, unaware that they had been changed or that anyone was still watching.
As teenagers, Nico, Ketty, Ed and Dylan start to experience strange flashes of power they cannot control. One can move objects with his mind, another sees danger before it happens, while others can slip inside people’s thoughts or push their bodies past normal limits.
They are pulled together by a shadowy government agency and trained as an off the books crime fighting unit. On paper they are helping to stop kidnaps, arms deals and organised crime. In reality they are constantly having to decide who to trust, how far to go and whether the adults handling them really have their best interests at heart.
Across the series the Medusa teens are sent from boarding schools and city streets to a hidden training camp in Spain and dangerous missions around the world. They deal with corrupt businessmen, rogue scientists and criminals desperate either to control the Medusa gene or wipe it out completely.
Alongside the action there is plenty of friction inside the team. Nico’s arrogance, Ketty’s fear about losing control, Ed’s self doubt and Dylan’s complicated family history all spill into the way they use their abilities. Crushes, jealousy and shifting loyalties make the group feel like a real set of friends under pressure rather than a perfect squad of superheroes.
Later books widen the Medusa universe to include other gene carriers and the threat of a designer drug that can copy their powers. The teens have to decide whether they are weapons, victims or something in between, and whether they can ever go back to ordinary life.
Fast paced, packed with cliffhangers and grounded in the everyday worries of school, friendship and family, the Medusa Project is ideal if you like your adventure stories with a strong sci fi twist and a very human heart.
