Series background & context
Pirates of Britannia lets Hildie McQueen trade glens and keeps for ships, ports, and the dangerous freedom of the sea. Her entries, The Sea Lyon and The Sea Lord, are part of a larger connected world, but they share a clear flavor: Scottish heroes with pirate reputations, fast-moving danger, and women who are in just as much trouble as the men are.
These books are adventure romances first and foremost. People are kidnapped, chased, forced into uneasy alliances, and pulled across dangerous water with enemies never far behind. That pace suits McQueen well because she likes emotional intensity and external pressure working at the same time.
The pirate setting also changes the balance of power in interesting ways. A ship is a closed world. Escape is harder. Trust matters more quickly. If a couple has unfinished history, as in The Sea Lyon, the sea makes every unresolved feeling feel bigger.
If you want historical romance with more motion than drawing rooms or clan keeps can offer, this connected world is worth a try. McQueen brings plenty of heart, but she also clearly enjoys the twistier, riskier possibilities of pirate adventure.
