The road from manuscript to shelf was not smooth. An early publisher failed, and Donlay put his own money into getting Category Five out into the world. It was a practical pilot's move, really: if one route closes, find another. The novel found readers, and it opened the door to the Donovan Nash books that followed, including Code Black, Zero Separation, Deadly Echoes, Aftershock, Pegasus Down, Seconds to Midnight, and Speed the Dawn.

He no longer flies professionally, and he now divides his time between Montana and the Pacific Northwest. He has also described himself as happiest in the mountains, especially with a fly rod nearby.
