Author bio
Philip C Quaintrell was born in Cheshire in 1989 and grew up loving big, imaginative stories long before he ever thought of writing his own. Today he is best known for his sprawling fantasy world of Verda and his galaxy spanning Terran Cycle.
He began adult life in a very different world, working long shifts as an emergency nurse. In between the chaos of the job he devoured fantasy and science fiction, often catching himself wanting to rewrite scenes, adjust characters and push the stories further.
A family holiday in 2013 became the turning point. Lying under a hot Mediterranean sky and looking at the stars, he started sketching out an idea just to see where it might go. That small act of escape slowly hardened into a serious ambition.
Back home, he wrote what would become Intrinsic, the first book of The Terran Cycle. Writing was a way to step out of the strain of nursing and into a different set of pressures, ones he could control on the page. The more he wrote, the more the characters took on lives of their own.
Like many new writers, he collected rejection letters from agents and presses. Rather than stop, he decided to publish the book himself. Sales were tiny at first, but they were real. After a couple of months he took his wife out for dinner to celebrate, quietly ticking "finish and publish a novel" off his bucket list.
A year later he tried something different to break through a patch of science fiction writers' block. The result was Rise of the Ranger and the beginning of The Echoes Saga, an epic fantasy series set in Verda. With almost no marketing beyond the whims of an online algorithm, the books found readers in multiple countries, eventually selling hundreds of thousands of copies and establishing him as a full time author.
Quaintrell has kept returning to Verda, expanding it through The Echoes Saga, The Ranger Archives and A Time of Dragons. Readers meet assassins trying to atone, stubborn dwarves, dragon riders and immortal elves, all caught between prophecy and personal loyalty. His stories lean into classic fantasy elements like ancient evils, magic relics and world-ending wars, but he anchors them in clear voices, tight pacing and the emotional cost of heroism.
Alongside the fantasy, The Terran Cycle follows Kalian Gaines and a scattered human remnant across ruined empires and alien conspiracies. Here too the focus stays on people forced to make hard choices: soldiers, scavengers, reluctant leaders and charming troublemakers whose small decisions echo across entire civilizations.
Now a full time writer, he still lives in Cheshire with his wife and two children. When he is not wrestling with the next chapter, he feeds the same obsessions that shaped his work in the first place, from superhero comics to late night film marathons. His books have sold more than a million copies worldwide, yet he continues to talk about his career as if the story is only just getting started.
