Author bio
Phil Tucker was born in Brazil and grew up across parts of South America and Western Europe. That mix of places seems to fit the kind of writer he became. His books move comfortably between epic fantasy, LitRPG, progression fantasy, urban fantasy, and horror, but they tend to share the same pull, big pressure, hard choices, and characters who have to fight their way into a future that does not want them.
Before his better-known fantasy series took off, Tucker spent years learning the craft the hard way. He wrote early books in darker speculative corners, including vampire fiction and urban fantasy, and he has spoken openly about how rough those early years were. One of those projects, a dystopian vampire trilogy, nearly made him quit. He was living in western Massachusetts then, stuck in a long winter, trying to force an ending that would not come.
That low point mattered.
What changed was not just the writing, but the way he approached the work. After he and his wife learned they were going to be parents, he got serious about the business side of publishing as well as the art. He moved back to Florida for a time, studied how independent publishing worked, and wrote in other lanes, including paranormal romance under a pen name, to sharpen his skills and keep money coming in. It was practical, unglamorous work, and it gave him the foundation he needed.
Then he circled back to the kind of fantasy he had loved for years.
That turn produced The Path of Flames, the opening novel in Chronicles of the Black Gate. It helped put his name in front of a much wider fantasy audience and gave him the momentum to keep going under his own name. Readers who start there usually notice the scale first, a war-torn empire, old religions, dangerous magic, and several storylines moving at once. They also tend to notice that even in the middle of big battles, Tucker keeps his eye on class, faith, loyalty, and the cost of power.
Since then, he has built out a bibliography with a wide range. Bastion and the later Immortal Great Souls books lean into progression fantasy, with brutal training, reincarnation, and a hero clawing his way upward through Hell. Death March and the Euphoria Online trilogy shift into game-world LitRPG, while Dawn of the Void brings that same systems-driven energy into an apocalypse setting. In The Empire of the Dead and the rest of the Godsblood books, he turns toward mythic fantasy, gods, undead armies, and old grudges that refuse to stay buried.
Even with all that variety, there is a through line. Tucker likes worlds with rules, pressure-cooker plots, and protagonists who are pushed until something essential shows through. His books often pair fast movement with a steady interest in what power does to people, what loyalty costs, and how much of yourself you can keep while trying to survive.
He now lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with his family. By his own account, the mountains and forests are a constant temptation, but he is usually inside at the laptop, building one more dangerous world.
