Chronicles of the Black Gate Books in Order

Chronicles of the Black Gate is the series that first put a lot of fantasy readers onto Phil Tucker. It opens with The Path of Flames, in a world where the Ascendant Empire is fraying under war, forbidden sorcery, and religious strain. Ancient portals help hold that empire together, and enemies armed with black fire want to tear it apart. From the start, the books promise classic epic fantasy scale, armies, ruins, monsters, politics, and old faiths under pressure.

What gives the series its own identity is the cast. Tucker tells this story through several points of view, including people near the bottom of the social order and people born into command. Asho, the squire with a scarred past, is one of the key entry points, but he is only one part of a larger pattern. Characters such as Iskra, Kethe, Tiron, Audsley, and Tharok all help show different faces of the same crumbling world.

That spread matters.

One book may lean harder into siege warfare, another into strange lore, another into the movement of armies and belief. Across the series, Tucker keeps returning to class, faith, duty, and the stories powerful people tell to justify the world as it is. The title itself, Black Gate, points toward the deeper mysteries of the setting, but the books do not rush those revelations. They build outward through conflict, travel, and the gradual sense that the empire's official truths do not explain nearly enough.

The tone is broad epic fantasy, but not bloodless. The Black Shriving, The Siege of Abythos, The Iron Circlet, and The White Song all keep raising the stakes as alliances shift and the war for the empire becomes inseparable from older, stranger dangers. Tucker likes battlefield momentum, but he also likes the moment after the charge, when characters have to live with what they chose.

There is a prequel novella, Escape from Bythos, that fills in Asho's backstory, but the main shape of the series is clear enough on its own. If you start with The Path of Flames, you are getting the real beginning.

Readers who come here should expect a multi-POV epic with an old-school feel, a big imaginative world, and a steady interest in how belief, power, and survival grind people down or remake them.
