This is not just a one-man show, either. June Cassidy becomes one of the series' anchors, an investigative journalist who is quick, brave, and as stubborn as Peter in her own way. Lewis, Peter's friend with a criminal past, adds another layer entirely. He is dangerous, loyal, funny in a dry way, and often the person who understands the underworld logic Peter does not. Once June and Lewis are firmly in the mix, the books become as much about trust and loyalty as they are about action.

That found-family thread matters.

Across the series, Peter is trying to do more than solve the problem in front of him. He is trying to build a life after trauma. His claustrophobia and war damage do not disappear between books, which gives the whole run a sense of movement and consequence.
