Author bio
Pepper D Basham was born in Galax, Virginia, and grew up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a landscape that still runs through her books. The mountains, the family stories, and the rhythms of Appalachian speech were part of her life long before they became part of her fiction.
Storytelling came early.
She has said she wrote her first story when she was nine, and that a grandmother calling her a writer at ten stuck with her. Coming from a family of oral storytellers seems to have mattered too. You can feel that in her novels. Even when the settings stretch to England, Egypt, or Italy, the stories still move with the warmth of someone sitting down to spin a yarn.
Writing, though, did not become a serious craft project overnight. Basham has talked about really digging into the work after college, when she already had two children and a full-time job. By day she worked as a speech-language pathologist, helping children find words and confidence. By night, she wrote. That balance between practical work and imaginative work seems to fit her books well. They are romantic and funny, yes, but they also care about healing, communication, and the ways people learn to trust each other.
She writes both historical and contemporary romance, and she moves easily between them. The Thorn Bearer and the rest of the Penned in Time trilogy bring World War I close and personal, with wounded characters trying to find grace in very hard places. A Twist of Faith shows her lighter side, pairing a polished speech expert with an Appalachian farmer in a warm, funny small-town story. The Mistletoe Countess adds a marriage of convenience and a country-house mystery. Authentically, Izzy leans into letters, texts, and bookish charm. The Heart of the Mountains returns to the Blue Ridge with a bigger historical sweep.
She likes to mix Blue Ridge roots with a love of Britain.
That blend has become one of her signatures. Some readers come to her for the mountain settings, the family ties, and the faith thread. Others come for the bookish humor, the awkwardly lovable heroes, and the way a Basham romance can turn from laughter to ache and back again without feeling forced. Even when she writes a mystery like the Freddie and Grace books, the emotional heart stays close to the surface.
Her work has picked up steady recognition over the years. Her books have appeared on the ECPA bestseller list and have been finalists or award winners in programs tied to the Christy, Carol, Grace, and Inspy awards. Those notices matter, but they also fit what longtime readers already know. She has built a wide range of stories without losing the things that make them feel like hers.
These days, Basham lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. She is a wife, a mom of five, still works in speech-language pathology, and has cheerfully mentioned her love of chocolate, jazz, hats, and Jesus in author materials.
That feels about right for her books too. They are full of heart, a little humor, strong family ties, and people who need hope more than polish. Whether she is writing about a village in England, a manor house in Scotland, or a mountain town back home, she keeps coming back to the same idea: broken things are still worth loving, and ordinary places can hold a lot of grace.
