The setting matters just as much as the romance. Basham writes Appalachia with affection and specificity. These are not generic small-town romances that could be dropped anywhere. The mountains, the speech patterns, the closeness of kin, the local pride, and even the friction between insiders and outsiders all shape the stories. Readers who like romances with a strong sense of place will find plenty to enjoy.

The books also carry a light Austen-flavored streak. Basham enjoys adapting classic-romance energy into modern settings, whether that means a My Fair Lady style premise, a charming troublemaker who is not quite what he seems, or a heroine whose confidence needs reshaping.
