Series background & context

Peculiar Mysteries opens with one of Renee George's best hooks. Sunny Haddock, a psychic from California, heads to Peculiar, Missouri, after her best friend Chavvah sends an SOS and then vanishes. The problem is that Peculiar is not just any small town. It is a shifter town, and the locals are not thrilled about a human nosing around their business.

Peculiar is a friendly name for a place with very sharp teeth.

The early books focus on Sunny, Chavvah, and the people closest to them, mixing murder, romance, and town secrets in a way that feels both cozy and a little chaotic. Sunny's psychic gift is useful, but not neat. The town has rules. The residents have loyalties. And almost everybody seems to know more than they are saying. That gives the mysteries a nice push-and-pull between community and concealment.

As the series grows, it opens out beyond Sunny. Other characters take the lead in later stories, which turns Peculiar from a backdrop into a full ensemble world. That shift works because George has already made the town feel lived in. Restaurants, family grudges, local politics, holiday events, and shifter customs all matter. By the time new leads step up, the town itself is part of the reason to keep reading.

The romance thread is strong throughout. Some books lean more mystery first, some lean more relationship first, but the blend stays pretty steady. George likes pairings with tension, banter, and emotional history, and Peculiar gives her a lot of room to play with that. The result is a series that can be funny, swoony, and dangerous in the same chapter.

The tone is one of the main draws. These books are light on their feet without becoming silly. You get psychic visions, shifter drama, sarcastic conversations, and real emotional stakes around trauma, loyalty, and belonging. Some entries are shorter holiday or bridge stories, but the overall mood stays consistent.

Start with You've Got Tail and keep going in order. Sunny's arrival is the cleanest way into the world, and the later books hit harder once you know the town and its people. If you like paranormal mysteries with romance, humor, and a strong community feel, Peculiar earns its place on the shelf.
