Series background & context
Madder Than Hell is paranormal romance with demon bargains, sister chaos, and a lot of very bad supernatural fine print. The series follows the Madder sisters, women who have made deals with demon lords in order to protect the people they love, and now have to live with what those deals cost.
Love and Hell make terrible business partners.
That setup gives the series its shape. Each book shifts the spotlight to a different sister, but the larger problem stays in place. The women are tied to powerful demons, forced into dangerous assignments, and always looking for some loophole that might save them, or at least keep the fallout from getting worse. The romances matter, but so does the running family story underneath them.
George gets a lot of mileage out of the contrast between the wild premise and the sisters' very human reactions to it. They are not cool with being pushed around by Hell. They argue, scheme, protect one another, and keep falling for people when that is the least convenient thing they could possibly do. That mix makes the books feel warmer than the demon setup might suggest.
The tone is punchy and playful. One sister might be chasing a target through Branson. Another might be trying to survive a demon's matchmaking plan. Somebody is usually one step away from making things worse for the whole family. Even so, the emotional center is easy to follow. The Madder sisters are close, and their loyalty to one another is what gives the series its backbone.
If you like short paranormal romances with a strong hook, this is an easy series to get into. It is lighter on world explanation than a full urban fantasy and stronger on chemistry, comedy, and supernatural complications. The demon mythology is there to raise the stakes, not bury the story.
Start with Gone with the Minion and read in order. The books work best when you already know the family's problem and can watch each sister take her turn in the spotlight. This is George in a gleefully messy mood, and that is most of the appeal.
