Paul Gamble Books in Order

Paul Gamble was born and brought up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Belfast still sits at the heart of his fiction. He has spent much of his working life in the civil service, including work in the Department of Communities, where he has worked alongside arts and cultural institutions across Northern Ireland.

He started writing at school and never really stopped.

Before publishing novels, Gamble wrote in plenty of other forms. Over the years he worked on television and radio projects for broadcasters including RTÉ and the BBC, and he also wrote for topical comedy sketch shows and stand-up performers. That background helps explain the timing of his books. The jokes arrive quickly, the strange details are delivered with a straight face, and even the most ridiculous moments tend to land with the neat rhythm of a comic sketch.

His move into children's fiction seems to have grown naturally out of that mix of comedy and curiosity. He has said the spark for his first novel came from noticing a single shoe lying in the road and wondering how someone could lose only one. From there the idea grew into bigger questions about pirates, secret organizations, and the hidden logic behind things that make no sense at all.

That odd little question turned into a whole world.

Gamble's debut novel, The Ministry of SUITs, arrived in 2016 and introduced readers to Jack Pearse and Trudy Emerson, two Belfast kids pulled into a hidden government department that deals with the strange, unusual, and impossible. The book won the Eilís Dillon Award for a first children's book at the Children's Books Ireland Awards. Its sequels, The Monster's Daughter and The Knight's Armor, keep the same central pairing while sending them into bigger, stranger, and more personal cases.

What readers tend to enjoy in these books is fairly easy to spot. They are fast, funny, and full of oddball ideas, but they are also built around sharp observation. Jack is curious to the point of trouble. Trudy is tougher, bolder, and often the one who cuts through nonsense. Around them, Belfast becomes a place where museums hide tunnels, aquariums become danger zones, and old myths turn out to come with official memos, supplies, and far too much paperwork. The books mix fantasy, adventure, conspiracy-style plotting, and dry humor without losing sight of the fact that these are still kids trying to make sense of a very strange world.

Rather than dropping his characters into a vague fantasy city, Gamble uses real places and a recognisable local feel. That gives the stories a strong sense of place. The world may be full of monsters, pirates, impossible inventions, and secret tunnels, but it is also tied to schools, buses, office rules, and ordinary streets. His books keep returning to that contrast between the everyday and the absurd, and that is a big part of their charm.

He still lives in Belfast, and outside books he has said he enjoys reading, local music venues, and theatre. That feels fitting. His work has the energy of someone who likes performance, timing, and the pleasure of a good line arriving exactly when it should.
