Pack of Outcasts brings together one of Eva Chase's warmest heroines with some of her roughest heroes. The main character is a supernatural young woman whose power keeps going haywire at the worst possible times. She wants to spread joy and make up for past harm, but the magical authorities are running out of patience.

So they give her one last chance.

That chance is a dangerous field mission with three monster criminals no one really trusts. The team includes a winter fae, a basilisk shifter, and a chaotic kitsune, which tells you a lot about the energy of the books. These men are strong, scarred, and not exactly thrilled to work with someone they see as too soft or too bright for the job. The heroine, meanwhile, has to prove that kindness is not the same thing as weakness.

What follows is part found-family story, part urban fantasy adventure. Strange creatures are attacking humans, hidden forces are pushing different realms toward disaster, and the team has to learn to function before the crisis gets even bigger. The romance grows through that teamwork, with the heroine's optimism slowly wearing down the walls around men who are used to surviving through distrust and isolation.

The contrast between her sunshine and their damage is the whole point. The books never pretend that sweetness fixes everything, but they do make a good case that compassion can be its own kind of strength. That gives the series a slightly different tone from Chase's darker academy or court books.

It still has plenty of chaos.

If you like misfit crews, supernatural missions, reluctant allies who become family, and a central heroine whose softness turns out to be anything but simple, Pack of Outcasts is a good fit. It is fast, affectionate, and full of monsters learning that being wanted is scarier than being feared.
