Series background & context

This series follows the Gallagher family and the private detective world surrounding them, with plenty of California coast atmosphere and a strong undercurrent of danger. Dana Mentink uses the family business well. It gives each book a built-in reason for secrets, surveillance, missing people, and cases that hit very close to home.

The tone shifts from naval settings to island investigations and courtroom-adjacent danger, but the core remains the same. In Dangerous Tidings, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer and a private investigator’s daughter hunt answers on Coronado Island. Seaside Secrets, Abducted, and Dangerous Testimony keep widening the Gallagher circle while adding mission work, gang pressure, stolen art, and witness threats.

If you like family-linked romantic suspense, this is one of Mentink’s stronger connected series. The books stand alone, but reading them in order makes the Gallagher relationships more satisfying, and it lets the private-eye angle deepen as the series goes on.
