Noah, still reeling from a terrible mistake, becomes unexpected protector to runaway bride Peyton Sutton. Dallas, fresh off a traumatic captivity, collides with Rachel Denning, a stuntwoman hiding in his mountain cabin after witnessing a murder. None of these couples meet at an easy moment, which is exactly why the stories work.

These men are used to being the rescuer. Owens is interested in what happens when they also need rescuing, or at least understanding. The women do not simply soften them. They challenge them, read them better than the heroes want to be read, and make a future look possible when the men have mostly stopped expecting one.
