Both books carry Owens's usual interest in people who have been hurt before and have to decide whether opening up again is worth the risk.

Because Dark Falls is a shared world, each book is designed to stand on its own even while belonging to a bigger setting. That makes this series easy to sample if you want a taste of Owens in a darker mode.
