Series background & context

ONSET takes a hidden-supernatural-world setup and runs it through the logic of police, federal agencies, and emergency response. David White is a small-town cop when a vampire attack crashes into his life. Surviving it gets him recruited into ONSET, part of the secret government structure that keeps the supernatural from spilling fully into public view.

That means the books have a nice procedural backbone. David is learning a new world, but he is also learning a job. The monsters are real, the powers are real, and the agencies policing them are made of people with jurisdictions, rules, rivalries, and the usual institutional blind spots. Stewart gets a lot of mileage out of treating the hidden world like something governments would absolutely try to regulate.

David himself is important to that balance. He is not arriving as a swaggering expert. He is a decent man with an unusual gift, thrown into an organization that wants to define him quickly because events are moving too fast to wait. That tension, between what ONSET thinks he is and what he may actually become, gives the series a solid long arc.

The tone lands between urban fantasy, action thriller, and secret-war story. Vampires are central, but they are not the only problem, and the conflict keeps widening as the books go on. Expect investigations, tactical fights, interagency secrets, and the sense that the hidden world is held together by tired people doing impossible work.
